A few weeks ago, Google launched a new image generation feature for Gemini (formerly known as Bard) that included the ability to create images of people.
While well intended—all AI systems are a work in progress—the results were disastrous. Images showed people of color in German military uniforms from World War II.
Google acknowledged the mistake and temporarily paused image generation of people in Gemini while it worked on an improved version.
"We recently decided to pause Gemini’s image generation of people while we work on improving the accuracy of its responses," said Prabhakar Raghavan, Google senior vice president of knowledge and information, in a blog post apologizing for the error.
As grievous as it is, that incident is one of many examples illustrating generative AI's potential to discriminate and show diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bias. Other examples include:
The accusation that Stable Diffusion amplified racial stereotypes, showcasing biases that were more extreme than those found in reality.
Reports that AI biometric identification systems disproportionately misidentified faces of Black individuals and minorities.

As generative AI systems become increasingly sophisticated, platform developers, marketing professionals, and other stakeholders must address the potential for bias and discrimination. Let's face it: Humans are biased, but there is no reason to let AI make it worse.

For instance, AI-powered hiring algorithms that prioritize certain educational backgrounds or skill sets may unintentionally discriminate against individuals from disadvantaged communities.
Another peril of unchecked bias is the erosion of public trust. When people perceive AI systems as biased or unfair, they are less likely to trust and adopt them. This can undermine AI's potential benefits and hinder its widespread adoption.
Furthermore, unchecked bias can exacerbate existing inequalities, widening the gap between privileged and marginalized groups, making it harder for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to succeed.

This can include training on unconscious bias, cultural competency, and ethical AI development practices. Teams should also support team members in continuing their professional development and staying up-to-date on the latest advances in AI.

AI development teams should involve diverse stakeholders, including users, ethicists, and community organizations, in the AI development process. This can help ensure AI systems design meets the needs of diverse user groups and identifies and addresses potential biases.

AI development teams should regularly audit AI systems for bias and take steps to mitigate any identified in the data sets. Use bias detection tools, conduct user testing with diverse user groups, and review AI system decisions for fairness and accuracy.
What Marketers Can Do to Ensure DEI Fairness
Marketers bear equal responsibility to ensure DEI fairness. Otherwise, AI-generated marketing content can inadvertently perpetuate discriminatory or exclusionary messaging that alienates certain consumer groups.
Marketing teams can take several proactive steps to ensure fair and ethical AI system use in their strategies and campaigns, some of which overlap with steps developers take. These include:

Develop ethical guidelines for AI use that align with your organization's values and stakeholders' expectations. Guidelines should cover aspects such as data privacy, consent, transparency, and accountability.

Respect user privacy and comply with data protection regulations like GDPR or CCPA. This includes obtaining consent before collecting data, using anonymization techniques where possible, and ensuring robust security measures to protect data.
3. Mitigate Bias and Promote Diversity
Work to identify and mitigate biases in AI algorithms. This involves using diverse data sets for training, regularly testing AI systems for bias, and involving teams with diverse backgrounds in the development and deployment processes.
4. Promote Transparency and Explainability
Be transparent about how and why AI is used in marketing campaigns. Use explainable AI (XAI) models that allow users to understand and interpret the AI's decisions and outputs when possible.
