Remember Babel?
In the ancient Old Testament Bible story, humans begin building a sky‑high tower, confident in their collective power. Halfway up, their language splinters into dozens of dialects. Suddenly, no one can coordinate. Tools drop, bricks scatter, work stops.
Swap dusty bricks for today’s AI apps, and you’ll recognize the modern enterprise: Marketing uses ChatGPT Plus, HR toys with résumé bots, and Finance builds a Python LLM in the corner. Everyone’s excited, yet no one speaks the same AI language.
Symptoms of a Modern Day Babel Stack
Shadow AI everywhere. Employees independently use ChatGPT and other LLMs and AI apps without approval or supervision.
Duplicate spend. Four departments buy the same SaaS seat … or worse, buy four different tools for the same task.
Inconsistent voice. Marketing’s AI writes playful copy; Legal’s bot rewrites it in lawyer‑speak; the brand loses cohesion.
Security & compliance risk. Private files seep into public models, triggering legal headaches.
When every team trains its own chatbot, you haven’t democratized AI—you’ve splintered it.

I’m reading that even now many companies at the management level want to pretend Generative AI hasn’t happened, and resourceful employees who try it out do it in stealth mode, partly because of the stigma that they are “cheating” if not using “their own brains”.
More broadly, in the context of your main point, (and maybe you’ve written about this) I’d say that’s it’s going to be bit of an on-going discovery process to figure out what is the right blend of top-down AI imposition/organization versus a bottom-up emergence of eventually team-wide AI use.

AI Babel is the perfect name for what’s happening right now. There is a company I know where HR is chatting with a resume bot, Product’s prototyping with Claude, and Marketing’s treating ChatGPT like a team member. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone trained a model to write meeting excuses. Definitely overdue for a shared dialect and governance before we all end up lost in translation, Paul.
